McAndrew resists
October 19, 1999
The DJ: Eric McAndrew, junior in journalism and mass communication, is assistant general manager and electronic music director at KURE. He grew up in Lincoln, Neb., but attended his senior year of high school at Valley in Des Moines.
The Show: “Resistor,” Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m.
The Menu: After primarily focusing on industrial in past years, Eric decided to switch his format to dark electro. “I try not to play anything with guitars unless they are sampled,” McAndrew said. “So this means that everything I play for the most part is electronically pure.”
The Bands: Evils Toy, Neuroactive Mesh, Snog, Moby, Air, VNV Nation, Boards of Canada and Apoptygma Berzerk.
DJ Life: “I can give kids a chance to hear the music that they may not normally be able to hear,” McAndrew says. “Electronic music itself is heard very little in the mainstream and industrial music even less, so I enjoy the idea that I can open it up to an audience that wouldn’t normally hear it.”
College Radio: “Where else can you tune into a loud rock show and then get two hours of sitar music or drum-n-bass? College radio is just a magnet for alternative subculture,” McAndrew said.
Free promotion and experience also play a huge role in McAndrew’s love for college radio. “We can promote anything we want, and that includes local bands and fellow campus organizations. It’s a win-win situation,” McAndrew said. “Plus, for the DJs and board members, it is an extremely unique experience and is great towards building a career.”
Future Plans: “I am thinking about working at a number of different electro record labels or promotion companies,” he says. “My goal is to one day run my own electronic music record label.”
