Well-known Iowa businessman John Pappajohn will be presenting a speech titled “Ethics in Financing Start-up Companies” today as part of the annual Bacon Ethics Lecture.

His presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 2 p.m. in Room 205 of Carver Hall.

“There are many conflicts of interest when trying to raise money for start-up companies,” said James Werbel, co-director for the Bacon Center.

“What negative news do you disclose and knowing how not to exaggerate the upsides is important,” he said.

Steve Carter, director of the Pappajohn Center at ISU, said Pappajohn plans to speak on “the importance of ethical considerations in starting new companies and the impact those considerations have on the company’s ability to raise money in the public market.”

“He will give specific examples of how ethical considerations limited a small business’s ability to raise funds,” he said.

Pappajohn is the CEO of Equity Dynamic, Inc., a venture capital firm in the health care industry. In 1992, he was named Iowa Business Leader of the Year, and in 1996 he entered the Iowa Business Hall of Fame.

The lecture will be broadcast via the Iowa Communications Network to Pappajohn Entrepreneur Center locations at the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, Drake University, North Iowa Area Community College and to an ICN viewing site in Room 160 of the Scheman Building.

Iowa State’s Murray G. Bacon Center for Ethics in Business is sponsoring Pappajohn’s presentation.

The mission of the center is to help Iowa students and businesses understand and come to grips with ethical dilemmas facing business now and in the future.
