ISU Color Guard will present flag at Nevada homecoming
October 7, 1999
The Iowa State Color Guard unit will be showing its spirit tonight by traveling to Nevada High School’s Homecoming to perform the opening ceremonies.
Mick Meneough, member of America Legion Post #48 in Nevada, asked the unit to perform. Meneough said the presentation of the National Anthem will be before the Homecoming football game’s kickoff, scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
“Our students recognize the importance of high school athletics and civic organizations like the American Legion to the small communities that surround Ames and are excited to represent ISU and the Navy Marine Core team,” said Rob Heiserer, assistant Marine officer for the ROTC program of the Navy’s midshipmen.
Russell said ISU’s Color Guard is one of the few that perform in the state.
“We practice about two times a week,” he said.
The Color Guard unit has three different teams consisting of four to seven people each, Heiserer said.
The group has five different flags they present: the American flag, the Navy flag, the Marine flag, the state flag and the unit flag.
“Participating in ISU’s Color Guard has been a fun way to get to know people and to lead them in something prestigious and honorable,” said Vika Russell, member of the Color Guard.
“It is an honor to be representing the Navy for the state of Iowa,” said Russell, junior in biology.
The Color Guard also has performed at ISU home football games this year.
“We will be doing the rest of the Color Guard presentations for the remainder of the season,” Heiserer said.
