After riding high on the strength of its first national ranking ever, the Iowa State women’s soccer team had its seven-game winning streak snapped over the weekend by Arizona State, 3-1.

The Cyclones split a pair of road games, losing to Arizona State on Friday and then starting a new winning streak Sunday by defeating Northern Arizona, 3-2.

Entering this weekend ranked 21st in the nation, the Cyclones first met the Sun Devils on Friday.

Sophomore Stacey Tullock put the Sun Devils on the board first at the 14-minute mark.

At the 38-minute mark, freshman Annie Henley tied the game for the Cyclones, heading in a free kick from sophomore Erica Florez to knot the game up at 1-1.

Arizona State would go on to score two more goals to seal the victory, one at 54 minutes from Tullock and another 10 minutes later on a corner kick by Jaclyn Clark.

Not only did the defeat snap the Cyclones seven-game winning streak, it also marked the first non-conference loss of the season for ISU.

Interestingly, this was the first defeat Iowa State has had by more than one goal since being shutout 3-0 at Baylor on Oct. 30, 1998.

On Sunday, the Cyclones looked to bounce back against a 1-4 Northern Arizona squad and did so with an overtime victory.

The match was scoreless until less than two minutes left in the first half when senior Kristina VanDoorn scored the first goal of her career to put the Cyclones up, 1-0.

ISU continued the scoring onslaught at the 52-minute mark, when freshman Katie Antongiovanni headed in a goal to increase the Cyclones’ lead to 2-0.

Junior forward Raegin Eyre responded for Northern Arizona with two unassisted goals, at the 75- and 89-minute marks, to tie the score up at 2-2.

The game ended tied 2-2 at the end of regulation play, moving the game into overtime.

Breaking the tie was Cyclone sophomore Janelle Beil, who snagged the ball off an assist from junior Krista Odenwald and headed the ball into the goal at 102 minutes to win the game for Iowa State.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lynley Hilligoss made five saves in the match, playing every minute and raising her record to 8-2 for the season.

The Cyclones ended their non-conference season with a 7-1 record, 8-2 overall.

Next Friday, the Cyclones will try to improve their conference record, currently sitting at 1-1, with a pair of road games in the conference.

The Cyclones play at Texas Friday before heading to Texas A&M for a match with the Aggies Sunday.

The Cyclones will not be home again until Friday Oct.15 when they play the Missouri Tigers.
