GSB looks for absent senator

In a rare situation laced with mystery, the Government of the Student Body is considering a bill to remove a GSB senator due to unexcused absences.
Darrell Redman, nontraditional, has accumulated three unexcused absences, which makes him eligible for removal from GSB, said Matt Craft, GSB president.
The senators heard the first reading of the bill at their meeting Wednesday night.
“I don’t like writing a bill like this at all, but I am directed by the bylaws,” said Alex Olson, off campus.
While the bylaws state three unexcused absences are grounds for removal from GSB, Craft said the bill was a “last resort.”
“The reason this came up is the attempts to contact senator Redman haven’t been successful,” he said.
For about three weeks, Olson has been attempting to contact Redman through phone calls, e-mails and references of friends.
“Nobody seems to know how to contact him,” Craft said. “This is a very rare occurrence.”
Normally, if three or four unexcused absences accumulate, the senator has to either change his or her attendance patterns or choose to resign, Craft said.
The senate opted not to waive the second reading of the bill; instead, it will be placed on next Wednesday’s agenda as old business.
“If something comes up between now and next week, we want to be able to deal with it,” Olson said. “We want to make sure due process is granted.”
If Redman is removed from GSB, a replacement must be found in six weeks, or Craft is eligible to fill his role.
“In most cases, a replacement is found in a week or two,” Craft said.
“This has nothing to do with his views or value,” he said. “It is the senators’ job to be a voice for the students. He isn’t providing that voice.”
