KURE Profile: Angie Chipman
September 7, 1999
The Show: “This Way Out! & Queer-Core Power Hour,” Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m. on 88.5 FM KURE.
The DJ: Angie Chipman, president of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Ally Alliance. She is majoring in psychology and history with minors in criminal justice and women’s studies.
The Menu: “Anything and everything. Even country,” she said. “Basically anything that is requested if I don’t absolutely despise it.”
The Bands: Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, Brenda Wieler.
Popularity: “I get a lot of phone calls, more so last year than this year, but things always start out slow,” she said. “Everyone who calls has a lot of positive things to say about the music I play.”
Crazy happenings on the show: “Other than me making an ass of myself, no,” she said. “I get nervous staring at that microphone thinking there are thousands of people out there listening to me. Then I realize there are only three or four people listening.”
Why she DJs: “I thought it would be a fun experience, and I wanted to try something new. I like music and I like to think I have decent taste in music. Plus it is an excellent opportunity to work on my communication skills.”
Future plans: “The possibilities are endless,” Chipman said. “I plan on changing the world somehow. Whether it be something as simple as a radio show or making a big speech in front of people using the communication skills I got from having this show.”
