The Cyclones and the Hawkeyes won’t be the only teams battling on the gridiron this weekend.

Women from Iowa State residence halls, sororities and other campus groups will be participating in Delta Sigma Phi’s Powder Puff Football Tournament. The fraternity’s second-annual event kicks off Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the intramural fields, east of the football stadium.

The groups paid $30 to participate in the double-elimination tournament. The teams of seven to 10 women will be coached by members of Delta Sigma Phi, 218 Ash Ave.

The proceeds will go to the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, the fraternity’s national philanthropy.

“Last year we raised about $350, and this year we hope to raise more,” said Dana Schwartz, philanthropy chairman of Delta Sigma Phi.

The money donated to the March of Dimes will go to the families of children with birth defects, said Jason Clement, president of Delta Sigma Phi.

Each year the fraternity gives the March of Dimes a check, and the foundation decides who should receive the money.

In the past, the ISU chapter put on a volleyball tournament, but last year the members decided to switch to powder puff football. “A lot of members enjoy football, so the project makes raising money even easier,” said Clement, senior in architecture.

The men are expecting a good turnout this year. “We’re hoping for 12 to 14 teams to participate,” said Schwartz, senior in architecture.

Jennifer Juehring, sophomore in pre-journalism and mass communication, is looking forward to testing her strength on the field.

“I think the tournament will be a great time, and I’m excited to play,” she said.

Several groups are sponsoring the event. Dominos and Subway will provide food on Sunday, and Coca-Cola is supplying beverages. Lucullan’s, Movies 12 and Dairy Queen are providing the prizes for the top three teams.

The fraternity also is accepting donations.
