U of I proposal raises red flags

Along with the proposed tuition increase, the Board of Regents will also hear a proposal from University of Iowa officials hoping to restructure the student-fee system .
U of I will ask the board’s permission to redirect some tuition money and establish separate mandatory student fees.
Government of the Student Body President Matt Craft said the proposal may end up costing students hundreds of dollars more. He said he will tell the board he opposes the change because it would set a bad precedent for regent universities.
Currently, both U of I and University of Northern Iowa employ student-fee structures similar to Iowa State’s.
ISU uses an 11-member committee to assign a percentage of tuition proceeds to student services such as CyRide, the Memorial Union, the recreation centers and clubs and organizations.
