Fraternities hold Recruitment Week

For the first time in six years, Iowa State fraternities are holding a five-day “Recruitment Week” beginning Sept. 18.

Run much like sororities’ Recruitment Week, men will visit all the houses on Saturday and Sunday nights, spending about 20 minutes at each house.

Monday, they will narrow down to their top six choices and spend a little more time at each house.

“On Tuesday, the men will visit their top two choices and spend a good amount of time with the guys in planned activities,” said Brian Tenclinger, coordinator of Greek Affairs.

The men selected by the houses will be notified Wednesday with a bid inviting them to join their fraternity.

Matt Mather, vice president of recruitment for InterFraternity Council, said Recruitment Week was not designed to eliminate but to augment summer informal recruitment.

“Summer recruitment has been going very well, but Recruitment Week is just a way to get more students involved,” said Mather, senior in computer engineering. “It’s easy access to the houses for guys who just don’t know where to start.”

Tenclinger described Recruitment Week as the coming together of the fraternity community to showcase its true colors and recruit new men.

IFC and the recruitment chairs of each house met weekly throughout the summer to coordinate a formal recruitment for this year. Mather said that although fraternity Recruitment Week has been on the books since last spring, final details were just finished this summer.

Fraternity houses are not required to participate in formal recruitment, but Tenclinger encourages it.

“I hear a lot of men on campus say they want to get involved but not right away. By now they should have settled in some and can now start looking at joining a fraternity,” he said.

If all goes well this year, Tenclinger said he hopes to make fraternity Recruitment Week an annual event.

“Our goals aren’t set too high for this year since it is the first year,” Mather said. “We really just want to gage the interest in the event and tap into a new market.”

Men interested in participating in Recruitment Week can call 294-4943, e-mail [email protected], or log on at www.stuorg.iastate.edu/IFC.

Tenclinger would like all registrations by Friday, Sept. 15, but the office will take registrations through Monday.

All activities throughout the week are free.
