‘Bug’s Life,’ bug buffet highlight horror festival

Caramel apple bug crunch, napoleons with mealworm custard filling and popcorn mealworm munchies.
Sound appetizing? If so, the annual Insect Horror Film Festival should be on your agenda.
The ISU Entomology Club’s horror festival will be held today from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union. However, organizers promise this year’s event won’t be as gut-churning as years past, thanks to a hit Disney movie.
“In the past, the festival has had somewhat of a negative role about the insects,” said Gretchen Schultz, a coordinator of the event. “But this year, with the film, ‘A Bug’s Life,’ the festival is taking a more positive role. It is a big step for insects.”
The club will show “A Bug’s Life” at 7:15 p.m.
Joel Coats, chairman of the entomology department, said the film festival offers an eye-opening look at insect life.
“The festival gives us a chance to educate and offer a close-up and interactive experience with the public,” he said. Coats stressed that insects play a vital role in the human world, whether they are pests, friends, predators or an artform.
The festival also will include activities ranging from insect tasting to an insect-petting zoo.
“One of the highlights this year at the petting zoo is the maggot therapy display,” said Schultz, sophomore in entomology. The basic idea behind maggot therapy is that the bugs are placed on wounds and feed on the dead tissue, cleaning out infections.
Other highlights include hissing cockroaches, giant millipedes and a butterfly tent display.
The festival is being sponsored by the ISU Entomology Club, the Student Union Board and Committee on Lectures. There is no admission charge for the event.
