Men’s club soccer opens season with impressive performance at tourney

The Iowa State men’s soccer club team has begun its 1999 campaign with two wins over nationally ranked opponents.

The season opened up with a three-game tournament at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas, over the Aug. 28 weekend.

The tournament was stacked with four teams that qualified for last year’s national tournament.

In the first game, ISU was able to stomp Weber State 3-1 and gain revenge from previous losses to the team.

“We really wanted this win. It gave us a chance to get back at them for last year’s loss in the semifinals at the national tournament,” junior Joe Lahart said.

The Cyclones were led in scoring by Adrian Van Etten, who was able to net two for the team, and Mike Morman, who scored his first goal of the season.

The winning ways continued for the Cyclones in the second game, as they were able to defeat arch rival Kansas 2-0 on their home turf.

This is the first time in three years that the team has been able to beat the nationally ranked Jayhawks.

“This was a great victory for us. With only losing one starter from last year’s team, we were finally able to beat Kansas,” said Matt Hillis.

The championship game proved to be too much for the Cyclones as they ran out of gas and were defeated 4-1 by Utah State.

ISU was able to tie the match at 1-1 right before halftime with a great header by Hapreet Wassan, but three second-half goals by Utah State proved fatal for the Cyclones.

“We were pretty worn out in the Utah State game.

“We only had one week of practice going into the tournament, and we just didn’t have our legs that game,” Lahart said.

The ‘Clones have finished their fall try-outs and have picked up several key position players.

They hope to continue their strong play this weekend as they host Mankato State, University of Kansas, University of Northern Iowa and University of Minnesota.

All of the games will be played at the Maple-Willow Complex beginning on Saturday.
