If you want to be one of the first fans to get your hands on My Scarlet Life’s new album, drop by the band’s show Friday at the Maintenance Shop.

Although their new album, “InfraRed,” doesn’t hit stores until Sept. 7, the band has decided to bring copies on tour and the first stop is Ames (lucky you).

My Scarlet Life had their first national exposure when five songs from their most recent disc, “Buzzbomb,” debuted on MTV’s “Road Rules.” With that kind of backing, the Chicago natives are sure to generate a buzz.

You’re Pretty will open Friday’s show at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $5 and don’t forget your current semester fee card if you want the student price.

Also appearing at the M-Shop this weekend is House of Large Sizes. Based in Cedar Falls, this musical power-house has a developed a reputation for making Iowa as well-known for its serious musicians as it’s known for corn. Yee haw! Catch this trio of rock veterans Saturday at 8 p.m. or 11 p.m. for $5.

Vivaldi, Handel, Ravel and Beethoven are about to turn over in their graves. William Orbit, who won a Grammy for co-producing Madonna’s “Ray of Light” will release a solo album early in 2000, according to a Maverick press release.

“Pieces In A Modern Style” feature’s Orbit’s interpretations of pieces by those classical composers, without the use of an orchestra.

The ferocious females of L7 released their latest record yesterday. “Slap Happy” came out on the group’s very own Wax Tadpole label in conjunction with Beck’s former label Bong Load, according to Rocktropolis.

It’s the band’s first release on their own label after having an extensive relationship with Slash/Reprise.

For those who remember the group’s good ol’ days, you may be in for a wake-up call. L7 have become more diverse and less formulaic in style, even expanding their parameters to the dark side of pop.
