The Iowa State women’s basketball team finished their Scandinavian tour in late May by beating Varberg 103-36 and the Norwegian All-Stars 107-52.

Without last year’s top scorers Stacy Frese and Megan Taylor, who missed the tour to try out for the U.S. National Team, the team finished the tour with a 4-1 record. The Cyclones’ lone loss on the tour came to Swedish team EOS Malbas.

Angie Welle recorded her third double-double against Varberg, leading the Cyclones with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Desiree Francis also recorded a double-double against Varberg with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Against the Norwegian All-Stars, the Cyclones hit 10 three-pointers in the first half and were leading 56-26 after 20 minutes. They hit 62.5 percent from three-point range in the game.

Tracy Gahan hit on 13 of 17 attempts, including five of six three-pointers. She led the Cyclones in scoring with 31 points. Welle and Francis had 17 points each.

The Cyclones recorded a 58-57 win over Denmark to open their tour and followed it with a 69-60 victory over the same team the following day.

Welle led all scorers in the first contest with 17 points and nine rebounds. Gahan and Monica Huelman had 12 points each.

ISU led 34-23 at half-time, but Denmark came back and narrowed the lead to one point.

In the last two minutes, Denmark had several opportunities to take the lead but did not convert. Three shots in the final seconds all missed, and time expired with the Cyclones in the lead.

“It is nice to see our team can compete and win without Stacy and Megan,” said head coach Bill Fennelly. “They kept their composure at the end when the game got close.”

Gahan led Iowa State with 18 points, followed by Francis with 16 and Welle with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

“This has been a fantastic experience in so many ways for all of us,” Fennelly said. “Our kids have spread the Cyclone spirit around the world.”

“All of our players played very well and very hard,” he said. “I hope that the players who had to assume new roles with Stacy and Megan gone can build on this and take it to the court next season.

“Lastly, and most importantly, I want to thank Gene Smith for allowing us to make this trip and provide all of us with an experience we will always remember.”
