‘Rush’ changes name nationwide

If you’re unfamiliar with “Recruitment Week” and “potential member,” it’s for good reason.

This is the first year those terms are being used in place of “Rush” and “Rushee” to describe sorority recruitment activities.

The National Panhellenic Council, an international governing board that represents sororities across North America, voted about a year ago to use the new terms in place of traditional labels, said Brian Tenclinger, coordinator for Greek Affairs.

“‘Rush’ isn’t an appropriate label for what we’re trying to create with the recruitment process,” he said. “‘Recruitment’ is a more accurate term, because it means to replenish, and that’s what we’re doing when we bring in new sorority members.”
