Advertising is meant to be in your face to get in your pocket

Frank Dunnick

This letter is in response to Ms. Spangler’s comments on Aug. 27.

Advertising is meant to attract a target audience.

Both Home Team and Ecampus.com market themselves so as to attract the large student populace in and around the Ames area.

When thinking of a way to get the average student’s attention, certain ideas work and others don’t.

While there are many students who probably feel the same way you do, a great many more took these ads for what they were intended to be. Humorous.

Both ads were designed to evoke a giggle or a smile and get the reader thinking not of sex, but of food or an Internet service.

The sexual connotation is only meant to catch one’s eye.

And judging by your letter, the advertisers were profoundly effective at catching yours.

As to your virginity:

I find it ironic that you complain as to the presence of sexual innuendo in advertising and then feel compelled to expose to the public your own sex life or lack thereof.

I suspect this to be an indicator of some frustration you must feel and suggest speaking to someone at Student Health.

While you are at it, find out if someone can help you develop a sense of humor; it seems to be as active as your sex life.
