A mechanical engineering professor was honored this month for his many contributions to the field.

Warren DeVries was one of five members of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) to be inducted into the 1999 College of Fellows.

Members were eligible by nomination only.

DeVries said he was very proud to receive the honor.

“This award is a very nice recognition of my peers and colleagues around the county that think that I am worthy of such an award,” he said.

Colleagues of DeVries said he deserved the honor.

“Dr. Warren DeVries is a long-time authority in machining and is known throughout the world as being a great contributor to the area,” said Pal Molian, professor of mechanical engineering.

“He is well-deserving of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers award.”

Molian said DeVries is a “man that is known all over the world for his contributions.”

“He also is very active on the area of mechanical engineering and also in promoting education and goals of students,” he said.

DeVries was nominated by a former colleague, Richard DeVor, who works at the University of Illinois.

DeVries has been a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers for 22 years, and he was the president of the North American Manufacturing Research Institute of SME.

DeVries earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Calvin College at Grand Rapids, Mich., and his master’s degree and doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

He has been working at ISU for three years and currently is teaching a course in computer-integrated manufacturing.
