Aid available for low-income families

Low-income families and individuals can receive financial aid to pay for electricity bills or buy cooling equipment through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

President Clinton released an additional $3.4 million to the state of Iowa for the program. The funds are part of a $55 million allocation to the nine Midwest states most affected by the recent heat wave and are part of LIHEAP.

Those households that received LIHEAP heating assistance last winter do not need to reapply, and $40 will automatically be deposited into their electric provider accounts. These participants need to contact their local community action agencies only if they have moved or made a change in their electric account.

Other households in need of assistance may apply at their local community action agencies. Proof of gross income for the past three months or calendar year and most recent electric bill are required. Applications will be taken through Aug. 31.

Mid-Iowa Community Action, Inc. (MICA) serves Story County and is located at 113 Colorado Ave., 296-2736.
