Former classmates lead student governments

Occasionally in today’s world, political couples are completely scandal-free.
Such is the case with Government of the Student Body President Matt Craft and his one-time prom date, Andrea Nechanicky, a senior in business administration at the University of Northern Iowa and vice president of UNI’s student government (NISG).
Union High School Principal Dennis Augustine, Craft and Nechanicky’s principal at Union High School in LaPorte City, remembers the two as dominating the boards in academics and extracurriculars.
“They were both memorable students in that they were strong academically,” Augustine said. “That they would become involved in college doesn’t surprise me a bit.”
Augustine said he’s pretty sure Andrea and Matt were the first couple in Union High history to both end up leading their respective university’s student governments.
Nechanicky said it was obvious that they both carried high ambitions with them even in high school.
“Matt and I had several classes together, but we were both very active in sports, music, government, etc.,” she said. “In fact, we were the only ones from our class who were very involved in all those areas.”
According to Craft and Nechanicky, it seemed natural that two good friends with so much in common should end up going to the prom together.
“She asked me,” Craft said. “It wasn’t like anything huge; that was kind of like the high point right there. I can’t even remember our prom theme.
“I hate to dance, and I think that made her a little angry,” Craft said. “I think she wanted to dance more but I wasn’t up to it.”
Knowing Craft better than many, Nechanicky said she thought he would have much to offer Iowa State students as the new president of the student body.
“He may seem like a ‘slacker’ because he makes time for fun and relaxation, but he gets a lot done,” said Nechanicky. “He is at ease while talking to high-ranking people. He loves to joke around. To be honest, I can’t think of anything ‘bad’ about the guy.”
