Suspicious package found in post office

A suspicious package was found yesterday in the lobby of the downtown Ames post office.

The package, which was addressed to the internal affairs division of the Denver Police Department, according to Ames Tribune reports, was later destroyed at the Ames Police Department’s firing range north of town.

The package was found about 4 a.m. sitting near the front counter of the post office lobby.

Packages sitting unattended are considered suspicious and subject to inspection, U.S. Postal Inspector Dave Margritz told the Tribune Wednesday.

Ames police and postal inspectors were called in to examine the package upon its discovery according to the Tribune. Although an X-ray machine discovered nothing out of the ordinary in the package, it was destroyed by a high-pressure water cannon just to be on the safe side.

After destruction, nothing dangerous was found in the package but personal belongings and clothing. The post office was evacuated for two hours, which caused slight delays in yesterday’s mail service.
