Alumni Association names three director candidates

Iowa State has named three candidates each for the positions of executive director of the Alumni Association and director of government relations. Both positions will be vacant as of July 1.

Warren Madden, vice president for Business and Finance, said President Martin Jischke appointed a search committee this spring after Carol Bradley, the current director of government relations, announced she would step down this summer.

He said the three were chosen out of 80 individuals who expressed interest in the nationally-advertised position.

“We were really looking for someone who had an understanding of federal and state appropriations,” Madden said. “I think these three candidates will do that.”

The director of government relations would work under the president to coordinate all university activities that involve congressional, federal, state legislative or agency relations.

Jim Hopson, the current executive director of the Alumni Association will retire at the end of June. Hopson has worked with the association since 1968.

The executive director of the Alumni Association serves as a representative of the university and the Alumni Association and oversees programming, events and the budget of the association.

Candidates for director of government relations are Deborah Murdock, assistant to the president for government relations at Portland State University, Oregon; Gary Steike, associate director of government relations at ISU; and Terry Thames, associate with The Renkes Group, Ltd., a Washington, D.C., consulting firm.

Candidates for executive director of the Alumni Association are Bradford Beets, alumni association executive director at Wichita State University, Kansas; Robert Davies, executive director for the alumni association and director of alumni relations at Boise State University, Idaho; and Jeffery Johnson, vice president of alumni relations at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
