In France, the French Open in tennis is well under way. Pete Sampras barely survived a five-set, four and a half hour marathon Tuesday. His opponent was Juan Antonio Marin from Costa Rica, ranked 92.

On Wednesday, first seeded Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov was beaten by Slovak Dominik Hrbaty and will lose his current no. 1 ranking when the tournament ends. Dutchman Richard Krajicek lost his match against American Vince Spadea.

Notables to win their second round matches included Andre Agassi, Hicham Arazi, Marcelo Rios, Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski and last year’s winner Carlos Moya.

In Europe, the cricket World Cup continues. South Africa was the first team to qualify for the “Super Six” after outclassing Kenya with a seven-wicket win in Amsterdam Wednesday. India beat Sri Lanka the same day. The win over the reigning champions slashed the betting odds on India as eventual winners from 20-1 to 8-1. The bookmakers’ favorites are South Africa, Pakistan and England. The odds for Bangladesh winning the World Cup is currently 1,000-1.

English Premier League soccer winners Manchester United secured “The Double” Saturday by beating Newcastle United 2-0 in Wembley Stadium in London. It’s the third time in the last five years that the club takes the title.

On Wednesday, Manchester United also won the European Chamions League, beating German team Bayern Munich 2-1 in the final. The Germans took the lead after six minutes with a free kick from 18 meters. Manchester came back in the last minute and Teddy Sheringham scored the equalizer on a header. Three minutes into injury time, Norwegian substitute striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winning goal., securing the first “triple” since 1972 when Ajax Amsterdam won all three titles. “I can’t believe it. Football. Bloody hell. I’m so proud of my players,” said manager Alex Ferguson to reporters after the game.

In Italy, AC Milan won the soccer Serie A for the fifth time in the last eight years by beating Perugia 2-1 Sunday. Lazio finished second and Fiorentina third.

Also in Italy, cycling race Giro d’Italia continues with Frenchman Laurent Jalabert from the ONCE team leading after the 12th stage. Italian Marco Pantani from the Mercatone Uno team is four seconds behind.

Finally, in Denmark, home favorite Camilla Martin became the first non-Asian to win the badminton women’s singles world title since 1977. She beat Dai Yun of China 2-1. In the men’s final, Sun Jun of China beat Fung Permadi from Taiwan 2-1. China won the women’s doubles final while South Korea won the men’s double, beating another South Korean team in the final.
