Special Olympics needs special volunteers
May 19, 1999
From May 20-22, the Iowa Special Olympics will once again take place in Ames. This is a unique opportunity for everyone in the community to be a part of a truly wonderful event.
The Special Olympics is one place where the spirit of sportsmanship can truly be appreciated. In this day and age, when even Little League games are tainted by scrutiny from parents, it’s refreshing to see an event that gets at what sport should be all about. The athletes compete solely for the thrill of achievement and never at the expense of the other athletes.
It may sound clich‚, but at the Special Olympics everyone is a winner. As you watch an event, you realize that it doesn’t matter who comes out ahead. The athletes themselves are just happy to have a forum to show their stuff.
But the athletes aren’t the only ones who can have a great experience with the Special Olympics. Every year the organizers desperately seek to find enough volunteers to pull off the mammoth event.
Volunteering for the Special Olympics requires very little time and is one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. It’s a shame more people don’t realize the wonderful experience waiting for them right here in town.
It’s easy to get down on yourself when you consider the difficulties you’ve faced in your life. Watching a Special Olympian who has faced more adversity than you have smile and enjoy being alive can be a sobering experience.
The volunteer coordinators are happy to help work around your schedule, and there are a variety of jobs available.
Volunteers do everything from timing events to escorting the winners to the podium. Others simply hug and congratulate the athletes after they cross the finish line.
Volunteers often work together with their friends or families. It’s a great way to spend time with each other while helping out. If you really don’t have the time to volunteer, you can always show your support in some other way. Why not check out the Opening Ceremonies tonight at 8:15 at Jack Trice Stadium. They always present a variety of family-oriented entertainment.
Better yet, go to some of the events and cheer on some of the competitors. Even if you don’t know them, they deserve your respect, and your presence will be much appreciated.
