The Iowa State women’s basketball team opened their Scandinavian tour with two wins over the Danish national team last weekend.

The Cyclones recorded a 58-57 win on Saturday and a 69-60 win on Sunday, according to the Iowa State Cyclones website.

Angie Welle led all scorers Saturday with 17 points and nine rebounds. Tracy Gahan and Monica Huelman had 12 points each.

ISU led 34-23 at half-time but Denmark came back and narrowed the lead down to one point.

In the last two minutes, Denmark had several opportunities to take the lead, but did not convert. Three shots in the final seconds all missed, and time expired with the Cyclones in the lead.

“It is nice to see our team can compete and win without Stacy (Frese) and Megan (Taylor),” said head coach Bill Fennelly. “They kept their composure at the end when the game got close.” Last season’s two top scorers remain in the U. S. to be a part of the National Team tryouts.

Sunday’s game was not as close as Saturday’s, seeing a 36-25 lead at half-time for the Cyclones, shooting 57.1 percent from the floor, according to the Cyclones’ website.

Gahan led Iowa State with 18 points, followed by Desiree Francis with 16 and Welle with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Fennelly said he was happy to see the team play well in back-to-back games. “Our balanced scoring helped us a lot,” he said.

Denmark’s leading scorer Sunday was Birna Ballisager, who played at Georgia, with 21 points. Anne Thorius, currently at the University of Michigan, scored 14 points, including three three-pointers in the second half.

The squad traveled to Sweden on Monday and will face the Swedish team Malhas in Malmo tonight.

Later this week, they travel to Varberg, also in Sweden, and finish their Scandinavian tour against the Norwegian All-Stars in Oslo. They are scheduled to return to Iowa next Monday.
