Outgoing GSB members part with words of advice
April 15, 1999
Following the adjournment of the 1998-99 Government of the Student Body, Matt Craft and Garrett Toay were sworn in as the new GSB president and vice president.
“A lot of the things we have to take care of have already been set out and done,” Craft said. “We change senates and objectives year in and year out, and we should stick with some of the good things that have been started.”
The 1999-2000 senators also were sworn in, and all nominations for executive cabinet were approved during the new senate’s first meeting, which followed the adjournment of the previous senate.
Many outgoing senators and GSB leaders gave advice to the newly seated senators.
“I wish them the best of luck, and keep the students’ interest close to heart because they are the most important. And if they lose sight of that, they can lose out,” said Bryan Burkhardt, former GSB president.
Former GSB Vice President Jamal White said he enjoyed working with the senate and also wished next year’s senate the best of luck.
“Never let it get to the point that you take this so seriously that you can’t talk to each other because the only thing that can come from that is losing colleagues and losing friends,” he said.
Alex Olson, off campus, said the new senate needs to work on the issues brought up by the previous senate.
“Last year’s senate did an excellent job and built a good foundation for next year’s senate to build on,” he said. “I think the old senate should be commended for all of their hard work and determination.”
It is important for senators to keep their heads clear and always look out for the students, Olson said.
“We will all have challenges, but don’t let senate drive your life,” he said.
Craft said the senate has a lot to look forward to.
“You should be very happy with the quality of leaders we have, and we are really excited about this senate,” he said.
Craft outlined his plans to tackle issues such as the Hilton expansion project, the status of the Memorial Union and other issues that affect students.
“There is a lot of stuff to do for this senate, but there are very capable leaders in there,” said T.J. Schneider, RCA. “Craft and this senate have ambitious goals, and we will accomplish a lot in this next session.”
Outgoing senators and faculty advisers emphasized the importance of clear communication to the new GSB members.
“The more you spend on the front end of a bill, the less time you spend in this room,” said Vernon Wall, former faculty adviser.
