Charity softball game scheduled
April 22, 1999
With baseball season in full swing, members of the Richardson Court Association Student Government are warming up to host their annual 100-inning charity softball game.
The event will be held Saturday at diamond six in South River Valley Park, 725 E. 13th St., from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held Sunday.
Students can pay $1 per person per inning, with a maximum of $10. All proceeds will go to the American Heart Association of Iowa.
Jason McLatchie, RCA intramural chairman, said the game will be an all-day event.
“Basically, we will start a regular softball game at 7 in the morning, and we’ll go 100 innings, which means we will probably finish around 11:30 at night,” said McLatchie, senior in management information systems.
McLatchie said he expects the number of innings people will play to vary.
“It’s not the same people — there are some who have signed up to play the entire 100 innings and plan to be there all day, but there are also some who have signed up to play just four innings,” he said.
Matt Craft, president of the Government of the Student Body and president of RCA, said he expects there will be a lot of interesting match-ups during the games.
“This year, we are having a [GSB] vs. [Inter-Residence Hall Association] match-up,” said Craft, junior in political science. “[KURE’s] Pirate Radio is also another student group that has a team, and a lot of other residence hall floors are having groups participate.”
McLatchie said he expects the RCA Student Government will be able to raise a decent amount of money through the event.
“Hopefully, if each person pays a $1, and they play up to 10 innings, we could raise about $4,000,” he said. “However, there is a maximum of $10 that people have to pay for innings. For example, if someone wanted to play above 10 innings, they [only] are obligated to pay $10.”
Craft said any donation above that amount is welcome.
Members of the RCA Student Government expect the event to be well received, Craft said.
“The atmosphere is really laid back, and everybody has a lot of fun,” he said. “Last year was great because we tried to get individual match-ups between different groups. Hopefully, this year will be great, too.”
In addition to the RCA Student Government, sponsors include Hy-Vee Food & Drug Stores, the RCA intramural committee and the RCA social and educational cultural chairpersons.
