Lil’ siblings to invade ISU
April 14, 1999
For Iowa State students who do not get enough quality time with their little brothers and sisters, “G.I. CY: Operation Sibs” is offering a chance for military-style bonding.
The Student Alumni Association is sponsoring the event, which is designed to let “little Cyclones” get a taste of life at ISU.
Any ISU student who wants to bring a guest between the age of 7 and 14 can apply in the SAA office and at hall desks in the residence halls. Applications are due Friday.
The guest does not have to be related to the student.
Cost of participation is $20 per guest and $10 per ISU student. The sibling also will receive a T-shirt with the G.I. CY logo.
Tara Gentry, co-chairwoman of SAA, said the event should be a fun-filled weekend for students and their “little sibs.”
“I came up here as a little sib when I was 9 and had a great time,” said Gentry, junior in Spanish. “It gives students a chance to spend quality time with their sibling, cousin or neighbor.”
Ryan Christenson, chairman of the student recruitment committee for SAA, agreed that the weekend should be a great experience for both students and little Cyclones.
“This should be an exciting weekend,” said Christenson, sophomore in mechanical engineering.
The weekend will start April 23 at 5 p.m. with registration and pizza at the Lied Recreation Center.
After registration, guest speaker Laura Bestler, assistant director of student activities, will take the stage.
“We chose Laura because she is fired up about everything. She can speak to anyone at any level,” Gentry said.
ISU students and their “little sibs” then will have the chance participate in activities such as making dog tags, face painting and participating in obstacle courses.
There also will be performances that night by the Yo-Yo Club, the ISU Drum Line Groove and the spirit squad.
The night will conclude with an optional movie.
“We realize that some of the kids will need to get home and get to bed,” Gentry said.
The guests will stay with their ISU student in their places of residence. On April 24, the weekend’s activities will resume at 9 a.m. with an omelet breakfast at Memorial Lutheran Church, 2228 Lincoln Way.
From there, students and guests will go to an “ISU Fun-Spots Tour,” which will hit points of interest around the university.
“I am sure that there will be some ISU students who will get to see things on this tour they never knew were on campus,” Gentry said.
After the tour, lunch will be served and a scavenger hunt around campus will follow.
The weekend will end on central campus with a hush-hush finale.
“We have just gotten word back on our top-secret concluding activity,” said Christenson, sophomore in mechanical engineering. “It should be really exciting, but we can’t disclose it now.”
