The Iowa State softball team was swept in a two-game series against No. 11 Oklahoma on Sunday to fall to 13-23 on the season. The Cyclones dropped the first contest 3-2 in ten innings before being shut out 5-0 in the second game.

Iowa State out-hit the Sooners in the opening game 11 to 10, but neither team could capitalize on its opportunities.

Oklahoma jumped out to an early 1-0 in the second inning, but ISU would answer with a run of its own in the third. Robyn Riedler was the first Cyclone to cross the plate when she scored on a Michelle Junod double to knot the game at one apiece.

Both teams were held scoreless until the eighth inning when Oklahoma added a run to take a 2-1 lead. However, ISU would once again answer the Sooners as Lisa Frank scored on an error to tie the game at 2-2.

In the 10th inning both teams were allowed to start with a runner on second according to the international tie-breaker rule. Oklahoma capitalized on the opportunity by scoring a run and taking a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Iowa State had its runner on second picked off on the very first pitch and wasn’t able to recover.

Junod, Erin Woods and Kimi Yoshizawa each contributed two hits to lead the Cyclones offensively, while Mandy Loushin was hit with the loss to fall to 6-11 overall.

The loss also seemed to take the wind out of the Cyclones’ sails as they were blanked in the second contest of the day. Oklahoma wasn’t able to score until the fourth inning, but that would be all it would need to record the win.

The Sooners added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to secure a 5-0 win. Iowa State was plagued by a lack of hitting as Frank and Lauren Cathey were the only Cyclones to record hits. Kristen Ferguson took the loss and dropped to 6-8 on the season.

Iowa State will look to bounce back on Tuesday when it hosts the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The action begins at 3 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
