Daily picks summer, fall editors in chief

A turnover of editors at the Iowa State Daily is approaching, and the Iowa State Daily Publication Board selected its new editors in chief Wednesday for the summer and the following school year.

Sara Ziegler, junior in journalism and mass communication, was chosen to head up the Daily operations for the 1999-2000 school year.

The bi-weekly, summer editions of the Daily will be under the direction of Michelle Murken, senior in journalism and mass communication.

Ziegler has a two-year history with the Daily. She began as a reporter, writing her first story on the DNA fixtures hanging in the weight room of the Jacobson Athletic Building.

“I was scared out of my mind to do it,” she said.

In spring ’98, Ziegler became the opinion editor. After the semester, she became managing editor in May ’98, serving in that position throughout the summer until the present time.

Ziegler will spend her summer as an intern reporting for The Des Moines Register.

She is planning some changes for next year’s paper, including additions of agriculture and international pages.

Although producing a daily newspaper in-between classes and trying to balance a normal college life may prove to be difficult, Ziegler said she is looking forward to the challenge.

Murken, who has worked at the Daily since August ’97, has been the head news editor since last May.

She said she hopes that the summer will provide a spring board for writers with little journalistic experience to build their confidence and skills.

“I’d like to get a variety of reporters from other departments and colleges,” she said. “I want people from other majors to feel welcome and comfortable.”

Applications for summer and fall editor, reporter and columnist positions are available now.
