Coaches, athletes to face dunk tank

Iowa State coaches and athletes will be the target of anyone who wants to dunk them this weekend in a Veishea dunk contest fundraiser hosted by ISU athletic trainers.

Stacie Hayes, athletic trainer and senior in exercise and sport science, said the trainers held this event five years ago and are starting it up again this year.

“If we get some of the people we hope to get, I think it will be a good turnout,” said Todd Neighbor, athletic trainer and junior in exercise and sport science.

ISU women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly will be one of many athletic coaches participating in the dunk contest, Hayes said.

Fennelly, who will be in the tank at about 5 p.m. Saturday, said he’s excited about the event.

“We’ve always tried to help out,” he said.

Fennelly also said some of his players may come to dunk him.

“I think they’ll probably be lined up,” he said.

Some of the women’s basketball players will sit on the dunk bar after Fennelly, so he said he will get a chance to dunk them in return.

Hayes said assistant football coaches Mike Nelson, Mike Woodley and Paul Rhoads also will sit on the dunk bar.

The event will raise money for the athletic trainers’ fund and for the Paul Snow Trust Fund, Neighbor said.

The Paul Snow Trust Fund was established when a graduate assistant lost his brother, Paul Snow, to an accident in 1993. The trust fund for Snow’s children started out with $400. The goal is to match the amount annually, Neighbor said.

Hayes and Neighbor both said they believe the dunk contest will be a success and probably will be a part of future Veishea celebrations.

Athletic trainers for all sports will help with the event, Neighbor said, although some of the trainers have games this weekend and will have to take shifts.

The event will be held on Welch Avenue from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday. It will cost $1 for three balls.
