Cyclone softball beats Nebraska

The Iowa State softball team used two three-run innings to defeat conference foe Nebraska, 6-3, on Sunday.

The Cyclones took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning after Lisa Frank and Laura Browning singled and eventually came around to score.

Frank came across the plate on Erin Woods’ RBI single and Browning scored as the Huskers attempted to throw out Woods while stealing second.

Woods also came across to score when Cindy Roethemeyer committed an error at third base.

Nebraska cut the ISU lead to 3-2 on Jennifer Williams’ solo home run in the third and her RBI double in the fourth.

However, the Cyclones would respond with another 3-run inning in the fifth inning.

Frank came across on a sacrifice fly, and Lauren Cathey’s single drove in Browning.

Pinch runner Amy Crittendon scored on a Kim Hoover single to make the score 6-2 in favor of ISU.

Nebraska’s come-back in the top of the seventh fell short as it could only muster one run to give the Cyclones a 6-3 victory.

Mandy Loushin and Kristin Ferguson combined for the pitching duties with Loushin receiving the win.

The win gives ISU a four-game winning streak and its second straight victory in conference competition.

The Cyclones also battled Missouri-Kansas City last week and came away with a two game sweep, 6-3 and 4-0. The story of the day was Woods, as she set ISU’s single season home run record with her eighth long ball of the year.

Woods wasted no time in breaking the record as she went deep to give the Cyclones an early 2-0 lead in the first.

The Kangaroos fought their way back by knotting the score at two apiece in the fourth. UMKC added another run in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

However, the Cyclones would answer with a run of their own in the sixth inning.

Jessica Polo doubled to score Woods and tie the score at 3-3.

Iowa State would put on the finishing touches in the top of the seventh by scoring three runs.

Michelle Junod scored on a double by Frank, and Woods’ single scored Tiffany Cornine.

Another RBI hit by Polo brought Frank across the plate to give ISU a commanding 6-3 lead.

Ferguson recorded the win by allowing only two runs on five hits to move her record to 8-10 on the season.

The second game of the double header was controlled by ISU throughout.

Once again, the Cyclones jumped out to an early first inning lead when Junod scored on a triple by Frank.

ISU added another run in the second inning when Browning’s double scored Robyn Riedler to make the score 2-0.

The Cyclones added a couple insurance runs in the fifth inning on a Junod RBI single that scored Browning and an RBI double by Woods to score Junod.

Once again, ISU’s pitching came through as Loushin recorded the win by allowing only two hits while striking out four.

The Cyclones resume play on Wednesday when they host intrastate rival Drake at 2 p.m.
