Tournaments add to tradition

In an attempt to garner more student involvement this Veishea, Veishea Olympics committee members have added new tournaments this year in addition to the traditional ones.

Registration for any of the events can be done today or Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. near the spiral staircase in the Memorial Union.

New billiards tournament

New this year is the men’s and women’s billiards tournament. On Tuesday, an eight-ball tournament will be held at the Memorial Union Recreation Center. On Wednesday, a nine-ball tournament will be held.

“I brought this idea because it is not a physical activity like football and soccer are. With a dry Veishea, I also thought that this tournament may bring in people who may normally be at the bar,” said Cory Cannon, Veishea Olympics co-chairman and junior in agricultural business.

Registration is $5 in advance and $7 the day of the event for each day. The tournaments will held at 8 p.m.

Prizes will go to the winners of the tournaments.

“KD Billiard and Dart Supply [4813 W. Lincoln Way] is sponsoring the event and are donating a cue and case for the winner of each division,” Cannon said.

Gift certificates will be awarded to second- and third-place winners.

John Osier, Veishea Olympics co-chairman and sophomore in business, said the committee had planned on holding a darts tournament, but they weren’t able to round up enough dart boards.

The radio station KCCQ 105.1 FM will be on hand at the billiards tournament.

Disc golf

Also new this year is a disc golf tournament. It will be held Sunday at noon at the Ames Disc Golf Area in Gateway Hills Park south of the Towers Residence Association.

The tournament will be divided into beginner and advanced groups.

Registration is $5.

Cannon said he is hoping the disc golf tournament will drum up interest.

“We added this tournament because we really want to get more people involved,” he said.

Winners of the tournament will receive gift certificates and T-shirts.

Flag football and soccer

Flag football and soccer games will be played April 13-15 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Both tournaments will only have a men’s division and there will not be co-ed teams.

Flag football will be played on the fields out near Towers. Soccer games will be played on the Richardson Court Association soccer fields.

Both flag football and soccer teams must have between seven to 10 players.

Registration is $15 for flag football and $20 for soccer, and teams must register in advance.

Rules are the same as ISU’s intramural sports rules.

Walk-in games

Passersby on Welch Avenue can get involved in Veishea by participating in the walk-in games held near Blimpie Subs and Salads, 218 Welch Ave.

There will be a free throw shoot, a football toss, a putting green and a baseball throw.

The games will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on April 16 and 2:30 to 8 p.m. on April 17.

“The walk-ins aren’t really tournaments. They have more of a carnival type atmosphere,” Osier said. “We will be judging ‘winners’ by certain rules, such as how close someone gets to the hole on the putting green.”
