PE classes invite students to ‘bring a friend to class’

The Department of Health and Human Performance is sponsoring the First Annual “Bring a Friend to Class Day” in order to “allow folks to see what we’re doing in the activity classes and to have fun,” said John McVan, coordinator of the event.

All students who currently are taking a physical education class are invited to bring a friend to their regularly scheduled classes Wednesday and Thursday.

About 2,000 students are registered for activity classes that range from golf to bowling this semester. And if all goes well, there will be close to 4,000 students attending classes for the event, said McVan, adjunct instructor of health and human performance.

“We’d really like to double the number of students in the classes [for the event],” he said.

If “Bring a Friend to Class Day” turns out to be a success, department officials are hoping to make it an annual affair.

The flier put out by the department to students in activity classes states that the event is being held “because [your friends] need to understand how hard you’re working at this thing they call PE.”

McVan said the event is being held because the activity classes are popular and tend to fill up early.

“Hopefully, this will encourage students to keep trying [to take an activity class],” he said.

Some students in physical education classes believe “Bring A Friend to Class Day” is a fun concept.

“I think it’s a good idea,” said Scott Losing, senior in computer engineering. “It’ll be fun to take a friend to my bowling class, and it sounds like a lot of people are looking forward to it.”

Bob Kilker, senior in electrical engineering, said the event seems like a creative way to get students involved.

“I think they should have a ‘Bring a Friend to Class Day’ every semester,” he said.

All students and friends should be dressed for and ready to participate in the regular activity for the class, McVan said.

“If you are registered or if you know someone who is registered in an activity class, come on in and have a good time this week,” he said.
