Road construction season begins in Ames

Road construction is an inevitable part of spring, and this year, Ames drivers will have several projects to contend with, said Art Barton, construction supervisor for the City of Ames.

“[Ames residents] will see a lot of construction, but there are only a few instances where they will be impeded by construction,” he said.

The City of Ames Public Works Department is scheduling 15 construction projects for the coming months, Barton said.

Barton said the Main Street reconstruction is the largest project planned for this year.

“We are doing the reconstruction in phases,” he said. “Access to all businesses remains available during reconstruction.”

Jerry Dickinson, information specialist with the Iowa Department of Transportation, said another big project will be the reconstruction on Interstate 35 from Ames north to the Hamilton County line.

“It will last for most of the summer into the fall,” he said.

Dickinson said the job entails tearing out and replacing the southbound lanes and diverting traffic to the northbound lanes.

“No more than two segments will be torn up at one time,” he said.

There is no official start date for the Interstate 35 construction project, he said.

Barton said other construction plans for Ames include:

  • Asphalt resurfacing on Cleveland Drive, Tyler Avenue, 25th Street, Wheeler Drive, Jackson Drive and Johnson Street.
  • Rehabilitation of W. Lincoln Way intersections from Beedle Drive to Thackeray Avenue.
  • Paving of Adams Street.
