Longhorns annihilate Cyclones

After Friday’s game against Texas was postponed due to weather conditions, it may have been better for Iowa State if it had just rained all weekend.

The Cyclone baseball team (14-28) was swept by the Longhorns in a three game series which featured excellent pitching by Texas and offensive futility by ISU.

“I’m disappointed because we just couldn’t muster the same type of offense that we did last week against Nebraska,” said head coach Lyle Smith.

In Saturday’s game, the Cyclones jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Tom Wierzbicki scored on Mack Paciorek’s single to left field. Texas came back to tie the score in the third and take a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

Both teams played fairly equal through the first half of the game, but the Longhorns displayed their dominance by scoring four runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

Cyclone reliever Charly Bigwood cooled down Texas for 2 2/3 innings but gave way to Darin Nelson who was tagged for four runs in 1/3 inning of work.

“Bigwood pitched well enough for us, but our hitting didn’t show up,” Smith said. “We either pitch well and not hit or just the opposite.”

The Longhorns added two more runs in the top of the ninth to secure a 12-1 blowout victory over the Cyclones.

Paciorek and Wierzbicki were the only bright spots for ISU. Paciorek contributed three singles, and Wierzbicki added his fourth and fifth doubles of the season.

Texas pitcher Dax Leone went the distance and scattered nine hits while striking out nine and walking none. ISU starter Brian Curtin was hit with the loss after giving up five earned runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Sunday’s double header began in promising fashion for ISU, as it jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead once again. Ben Van Iderstine’s RBI single scored Wierzbicki, but ISU was picked off and went down on strikes to end the rally.

Texas scored a run in the second and third inning to take a 2-1 lead, but the Cyclones would respond with a run of their own. Spencer Allen scored from second base when Texas third baseman Chris Houser misplayed a hard-hit grounder from Paciorek.

However the Longhorns would use an explosive fifth inning once again to take a 7-2 lead. Bigwood’s consecutive scoreless inning mark came to an end when Texas tagged the reliever for four runs in the top of the fifth.

ISU’s Dave Rossman pitched the final three innings masterfully by allowing only one hit and striking out three, but the Cyclone offense sputtered and was also shut down.

Texas pitcher Scott Dunn pitched the complete game giving up only five hits and not surrendering a single earned run.

The second game of the double header saw ISU fail to execute and resulted in a 4-1 loss. The Cyclones got excellent pitching from Nate Hilton but faltered in the clutch situations, which led to the loss.

“I thought Hilton pitched good enough to win,” Smith said. “A worst-case scenario would have been a 2-1 game, because we misplayed two sure outs that led to runs.”

Texas got on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but ISU would knot the score in the fourth. Longhorn pitcher D.J. Jones beaned two Cyclones and Jade O’Brien added a single to load the bases. After Derrick Roberts went down on strikes, Matt Nordby singled just over the second baseman’s reach to score Paciorek.

Just like the previous two games, ISU played Texas even for the first part of the game but fell apart in the latter innings. The Longhorns added two runs in the sixth and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to secure a 4-1 victory.

Hilton was hit with the loss after pitching the entire game and giving up four earned runs on twelve hits. Jones became the third straight Texas hurler to go the distance as he allowed only one earned run to get the win.

The Cyclones will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they host Winona State at 2 p.m. at Cap Timm Field.
