SNL’s Gasteyer opens for celebration
March 2, 1999
A woman of many faces, comedienne and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Ana Gasteyer will be making an appearance at Iowa State tonight.
Gasteyer will be speaking at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. The speech is free and open to the public.
Gasteyer’s SNL characters include “Margaret Jo,” a National Public Radio co-host; “Bobbi Moughan-Culp,” a musical middle-school teacher; “Cinder Calhoun,” a politically correct Lilith Fair stand-up comic; and “Kincaid,” a take-off of MTV vee-jay Kennedy.
She also is known for her impersonations of Martha Stewart, Celine Dion and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Pat Miller, coordinator of the Committee on Lectures, noted that Gasteyer is the opening speaker for “Women’s History Month.”
Miller said Gasteyer, a three-year veteran of SNL, will talk about her life as a woman in male-dominated show business.
Gasteyer also will show clips from SNL.
“Everyone knows the characters she impersonates,” she said. “We expect the show to be a success.”
Members of the ISU improvisation comedy group Grandma Mojo’s Moonshine Revival had lunch with Gasteyer Monday.
Jeremy Huisman, member of Grandma Mojo’s, is a self-proclaimed fan of SNL. He said he enjoyed meeting Gasteyer.
“It was great. She was really open, and she told us a lot about the show, behind-the-scenes types of things,” said Huisman, junior in mechanical engineering. “[SNL] is really grueling; she told us how they work until 2 or 3 in the morning, drinking lots of coffee.”
Huisman said the process that goes into creating a weekly episode of SNL sounded similar to Grandma Mojo’s.
“The process is almost the same; they don’t have that much time to practice,” he said. “They run through the skits about three to four times and then a half-an-hour before the show. They change the whole script.”
Huisman said “it was refreshing to know that it’s not just us.”
Tyler Abens, member of Grandma Mojo’s, agreed that he learned a lot from Gasteyer.
“She told us what it’s like to work with some of the people; how it is to work with people who are used to doing skits compared to people like [guest hosts] Garth Brooks and Michael Jordan,” said Abens, senior in industrial technology.
Stephanie Pearo, member of Grandma Mojo’s, also enjoyed meeting Gasteyer.
“She was really nice and informative about her role as a woman in comedy among nine men at SNL,” she said.
