The InterFraternity Council, along with the Ames Police Department, has organized a basketball tournament that will help the Boys & Girls Club of Ames.

The event will be held at the Boys & Girls Club of Ames, 210 S. Fifth St., on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

All the money raised will go directly to the club. The cost for attending the event is $1.

The Panhellenic Council, Veishea Central Committee and the Greek Week Central Committee also will be participating.

They have formed four mixed teams, which will be playing against the Boys & Girls Club and members of the Ames Police Department.

IFC President Adam Oris said the event is a wonderful opportunity for Iowa State students, as well as the children it benefits.

The money raised will support programs and activities at the Boys & Girls Club, he said. The funds also will go toward providing a wider range of activities and events for the students, especially during the summer.

“We are happy to help out the kids in any way we can,” said Oris, senior in psychology and management.

Oris said he feels that it is a “great opportunity for the children to meet the leaders of ISU.”

Rory Echer, community resource officer for the Ames Police, is coordinating the event. He helps the Boys & Girls Club with fund-raising activities.

Echer said he believes the game is significant for several reasons.

“It gives an excellent opportunity for leadership skills … good human skills,” he said.

The children of the Boys & Girls Club are between the ages of 7 and 18, and the majority of them live within Ames, said Geff Gescheidler, executive director of the Ames Boys & Girls Club.

Gescheidler said this event will help “serve the children in a wide range of programs and activities.”

“They call it a special event that has more positive opportunities available to them,” he said.

What makes the event even more special is the show of community support, Gescheidler said.

“We would like to thank the groups involved and the people participating,” he said.
