Editor’s Note: SoapBoxing is a forum for members of the Iowa State and Ames communities to rave about various topics. Send interview requests via e-mail to [email protected]. This week, Bob Hollinger, professor of philosophy, speaks out.

Radio stations — “I like to listen to the golden oldies from the ’50s and ’60s on KIOA. It brings back memories of when I had hair. I like to listen to the ‘Bob and Tom Show’ in the morning. They’re pretty funny.”

Bad advice — “I had an adviser when I was an undergraduate who told me he thought I was crazy for wanting to be a philosophy major. Maybe that was good advice, I don’t know.”

“The Two-Second Rule” — “I hate people who tailgate. I have a habit of flicking people off, but my wife doesn’t like that. She says someday I’m going to get shot. I don’t mind [tailgaters] so much on the interstate, but these days you can’t drive on the street without someone who wants to drive 60 miles per hour.”

The Brooklyn Dodgers — “I used to watch baseball. I grew up in New York. But after the Dodgers left and they tore down Ebbits Field in ’57, I got depressed and stopped watching. When I was a kid, I was a big Brooklyn Dodgers fan.”

Y2K — “I’ve talked to people in Durham [Center] who don’t think anything is going to happen. It could be a self-fulfilling prophecy if people perform in certain ways — take money out of banks. My daughter is a tax lawyer, she says it could cause a worldwide recession. I don’t see any reason that’s going to happen.”

Fight: Immanuel Kant vs. Bob Dylan – “I suspect Bob Dylan wouldn’t share Kant’s views about morality. Kant was a believer in moral absolutes; every problem has a clear ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ Although, Bob has been into several different religious beliefs. Kant was pretty uptight religiously and morally. On the other hand, I don’t know if Kant would like ‘Blowin’ in the Wind.'”
