Craft and Toay in the house
March 12, 1999
The students have spoken, and Matt Craft and Garret Toay will be the new president and vice-president of the Government of the Student Body next year.
Craft, the current president of the Richardson Court Association, and Toay, the current Interfraternity Council senator, are good representatives of Iowa State students.
And to all three slates’ credit, the race was fairly clean — there was little bickering among the parties who were involved.
However, as with most elections, there was some bad blood and controversy.
After declaring their intent to run, current GSB President Bryan Burkhardt and Vice President Jamal White decided not to make a bid for re-election, citing time constraints as a problem.
Several GSB senators encouraged students to vote “None Of The Above,” suggesting the three contending slates were not up to par.
The bottom line is what counts, and ISU overwhelmingly wants Craft and Toay to represent them.
Craft and Toay said they want to lobby the Board of Regents, the governing body of the three Iowa public universities — an institution that is usually all too eager to heap tuition increases upon college students.
The dynamic duo also wants to focus on diversity on campus by re-creating the director of minority student affairs GSB cabinet position and advocating a multicultural center.
But if we want them to keep their promises, we have to keep up our end of the bargain. We must remind Craft and Toay of their promises when next year rolls around, and we have to make sure to give them our input.
All three executive slates said they wanted to make GSB more accessible to students.
Indeed, Craft and Toay have proposed updating the GSB Web page, hosting a KURE call-in radio talk show and setting up town forum-type meetings to find out what exactly students want from GSB.
Though only about 1,500 votes were cast for the election, Craft and Toay are now the representatives of all ISU students. Whether you voted or not, you still have a say in what happens in GSB next year.
The unofficial motto of GSB is “All students are members of GSB,” and instead of general apathy, students should take advantage of these and similar programs to make sure their student government is working for them.
Otherwise, we have no right to complain.
Good luck, boys.
