Cyclones beat Hawks in 14-inning marathon

The ISU baseball team took the rubber match of the season between itself and intrastate rival Iowa in thrilling fashion, capturing a come-from-behind 6-5 victory in 14 innings at Cap Timm Field Tuesday.

The Cyclones got the win when Ben Van Iderstine singled in Aaron Run in the 14th inning of the game.

The win improved Iowa State to 7-20 on the year, while Iowa fell to 10-13.

Dave Rossman started the game for the Cyclones and lasted only 2 1/3 innings before being pulled in favor of Charly Bigwood.

The freshman from Clinton then went out and pitched 10 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits during his stint.

Josh Twedt came in the 14th to strike out the side, and when ISU came through in the bottom, he got his second win of the year.

Hitting stars for the Cyclones were O’Brien, who was 3-5 with 2 RBI, and Aaron Runk, who was 3-6 with two runs scored.

Siple, Paciorek and Ben Van Iderstine all had two hits for the Cyclones.

ISU took an early 1-0 lead but gave it back almost immediately as Iowa scored two runs in the top of the second.

The Hawks added a run in the third before ISU made its comeback.

They scored two runs in the 8th to send the game to extra frames.

The teams traded two runs in the 12th before ISU mounted the winning rally in the 14th.

The game lasted 352 minutes and was viewed by 3,210 fans.

It was also the first game being televised by ISU 9, who will televise three more home games on the year.

The two teams had met before on March 23 in Iowa City.

The Cyclones fell this time 10-4. ISU tied the game at 4 in the seventh inning, but let the Hawkeyes tally six unearned runs the next inning to put the game out of reach

After starting out the season 4-0, the Cyclones had only been able to come up with two victories in their next 22 contests.

The squad has yet to reach the win column in the Big 12, as it is 0-12.

This was the third and final time the squad faced the Hawkeyes this season, with the two teams splitting the initial two decisions.

ISU was able to come up with an 8-5 win in the NE Louisiana Invitational on February 28.

The game saw the Cyclones smack five doubles, while Paciorek and Derrick Roberts had two hits to pace the Cyclones.

Rossman picked up the win as he limited the Hawks to four runs in six innings of work..

ISU has been led at the plate this season by Runk. The junior from Stillwater, Minn., is hitting .402 this season.

He also leads the team in on-base percentage (.488), home runs (5), runs (35), stolen bases (16) and walks (17).

Runk ranks second on the Cyclones all-time batting average list at .373.

Paciorek has also been having a solid campaign, hitting .308 on the season.

The shortstop from Pasadena, Calif., has started every game this year and leads the squad with 10 multiple-hit games on the season.

Siple has provided a lift to the team after transferring from DMACC for this season.

He’s fourth on the team in batting average with a .299 mark.

He provided the winning home run in the top of the 10th inning to beat Air Force in the team’s second game of the year.

On the mound, ISU has been led by Brian Curtin. The sophomore from Lansing is 2-4 with a 4.18 ERA.

In the Big 12, ISU has been swept in three game sets by Texas A&M, Kansas, Oklahoma State and Kansas State.

ISU will play Creighton today in Omaha before travelling to Lubbock for a three-game set with the Red Raiders of Texas Tech this weekend.

The next home game will take place on Tuesday, April 6 against Mankato State.
