I can’t remember the last time

David Sandgren

It’s a really good thing this so-called “riot” happened because it finally gives the Daily something to write about.

I can’t remember the last time I actually spent time reading articles and not just the Quick Es.

The majority of the articles and letters written made me laugh. There are a lot of points made that just are not true or were not thought through well enough. I’m writing this to inform anybody who was not involved.

You don’t even know why we did it. Do you want to know the real reason for the so called “riot?” Well, I’ll tell you if you can keep a secret. There wasn’t just one reason. Each of us had a different agenda. Here are just a few:

1. Extreme boredom of Ames (that was my reason).

2. A 9 percent increase for housing, and a 4.5 percent increase for tuition, with no reason (keep in mind that inflation is only 3 percent).

3. Get together with friends.

4. Fuck dry Veishea? Not really, but when don’t students yell that?

The police kept telling us that we were going to pay for the damages we caused.

So where is the 9 percent and 4.5 percent going, into someone’s pocket?

I think we’ve already paid for them.

Also on this note, why did the DPS automatically think this “riot” is only Iowa State students? I’m bound to think that not every “rioter” goes to school here.

Want to know the real reason no arrests were made? Because when DPS tried to detain anyone, we would rush them. Now, if you’re a cop, are you going to detain anyone if a mob of nearly a thousand is running at you?

Veishea is not Veishea any more. And it will never be again. So who really cares if it gets cancelled this year? That weekend will just be like any other, and the city won’t be dry.

So for all you drinkers, of age or not, isn’t that a better alternative than listening to some guy make jokes and not drinking?

Quit calling it a “riot.” It was a simple get-together. Diversity was never a factor Thursday night. People of different sex, race, culture, religion, housing area and age all got together with one thing in mind: having fun.

I always thought ISU was trying to promote togetherness. For once, no rivalry and no fighting. So I think ISU should look at Thursday night as a good thing.

OK, the numbers. Every article has given a different number. All of them have been right.

The numbers fluctuated the whole night. We started out with two people not rioting.

By the time the Towers crowd left, we had a good 60-100 people. We had 300-500 after leaving Helser and Old RCA.

By the time we made it to the stadium, we had a good 1,000. We had about 1,500 after frats and enough to fill Storm Street from Ash to Welch.

If there were only 500 of us like the cops say, how big would each of us have to be to fill that kind of space?

I was there, but I didn’t agree with everything that happened. I didn’t agree with the signs or light fixtures coming down.

But on another note, I also don’t agree with the 9 percent increase for no reason or the 4.5 percent increase for no reason. I also don’t agree with the teachers who are more interested in research than teaching. I could go on.

One of the articles said we are “lucky to be here.” Why is that? I got accepted at six schools, so am I lucky? No, I chose to come here from out of state; I didn’t gamble for my spot here.

All you people over 21 are just jealous of what we did Thursday night.

Was it because we didn’t get in trouble, you don’t have the guts to do what we did or you have just lost the child in you? We are supposed to have fun at college, right? So quit acting like grownups.

About printing the word “fuck,” remember the audience this paper is aimed at. Simple as that.

So the cops said the “riot” was not important or just was nothing special, huh?

So, is it special if it made national news? Because it did.
