Stop whining, start running
March 9, 1999
In last Friday’s Daily, two members of the GSB Executive Cabinet wrote a letter to the editor encouraging students to take a new approach to voting for GSB president and vice president.
Instead of picking one of the three executive slates, Scott Berscheid and DeDe Jordan-Harris urged students to write in something different.
None of the above.
#Berscheid and Jordan-Harris still want students to vote; they just don’t want students to vote for any of the candidates running this year.
Their reason? The candidates running this year are, according to them, simply not up to par.
So, in order to avoid electing someone who won’t truly represent Iowa State students, Berscheid and Jordan-Harris would rather students not even bother.
Normally, the problem with the GSB elections is that students don’t care enough about student government to get to the polls.
If Berscheid and Jordan-Harris are right, the true problem is that there’s no one even worthy of the virtually non-existent student vote.
“By voting NONE OF THE ABOVE for the President/Vice President executive slate, we are offering ourselves a solution. We are giving students back their voices and finally allowing them to make their feelings known,” they wrote.
Unfortunately, voting “none of the above” won’t give students a voice. It will just waste their votes.
Perhaps Berscheid and Jordan-Harris are right. Maybe the candidates running for executive office won’t be able to satisfy the entire campus.
But the solution to this problem is not wasting a vote.
The solution is for students to do exactly what Benjamin Studenski, Matt Craft and Justin Hattan did.
They weren’t happy with how they were being represented. They didn’t like the other options for president of GSB.
So they stopped complaining and made a commitment to try to do it better.
They’re not whining about lack of representation — they’re running for president. They’re getting involved in the process, so they can make a difference.
If you voted or are planning to vote in the GSB elections this week, congratulations. You’re doing your part as a member of the Iowa State community.
But if you didn’t vote or are already complaining about who’s going to win, do us all a favor.
Stop whining and do something about it.
