Monica: Lady sings the blues

Editorial Board

We have seen her on our televisions everyday for the last year.

Last night, Monica Lewinsky told us everything in her own words during an interview with Barbara Walters.

She apologized to the country for putting them through this. She even apologized to Hillary and Chelsea Clinton for the affair.

“I wouldn’t dream of asking Chelsea and Mrs. Clinton to forgive me,” Lewinsky said. “But I would ask them to know that I am very sorry for what happened and for what they’ve been through.”

She talked about problems from self-esteem and weight-control to a prior affair.

She even spoke of another relationship during the affair in which she became pregnant and ended up getting an abortion.

Talking about her relationship with President Clinton, Lewinsky seemed desperate and often afraid of the consequences of speaking out.

Early on, she giggled after many questions and seemed to have a cavalier attitude about much of the ordeal.

But her descriptions of the relationship were often lurid.

After all we have been through as a nation, it was still difficult to believe this was about our president.

She spoke of how she was sexually attracted and hopelessly in love.

Lewinsky seemed very strong and confident in herself.

She answered questions either in a strong straight-forward nature or in a hesitant and reserved manner.

She choked up at times when presented with tough questions.

Lewinsky seems to have regained her self-esteem somewhat, joking at times with Walters about the humiliating details of her illicit romance.

After being dragged through the public spotlight and made the butt of jokes all around the world, she seems to have shaken it off pretty well, in time to give a strong performance.

It was nice to hear her voice and point of view though Lewinsky seemed terrified at the prospect of saying too much and jeopardizing her immunity deal.

She finally told her side of the story, but at times it was hard to believe that we could have spent the last year on something so juvenile as sex.

Hopefully, this is the final chapter about an ugly ordeal that has consumed the country for the last year, but that seems unlikely.

Lewinsky plans to move on, it is about time the country does too.
