Hole, Marilyn Manson cancel remaining dates

You knew it couldn’t last forever. After disappointing ticket sales and feuds between the bands, Hole and Marilyn Manson have decided to call it quits. The divorce may well confirm that rock is indeed dead.

In collaboration with Rainforest Awareness Week, the ninth Annual Carnegie Hall Benefit Concert for the Rainforest Foundation will be held on April 17.

Tony Bennett, Billy Joel, Don Henley, Sandra Bernhard, Ricky Martin and Charles Aznavour will join Sting, Sir Elton John and James Taylor to perform their favorite Frank Sinatra songs for the benefit gala, according to Rocktropolis.

In other benefit concert news, Better Than Ezra and Blackalicious plan to perform at the second annual Pax benefit in New York City on March 27, according to Rocktropolis. Pax, which is Latin for peace, strives to end gun violence.

Busta Rhymes busted out the video “What’s It Gonna Be?” on March 12 on MTV. For those who haven’t yet seen the video, directed by Hype Williams, Rhymes said, “It’s like some futuristic, metallic, liquidy, sensual, sexy, groundbreaking, crazy, year 2000 special-effects shit.”

While Iowa State students were taking a spring break, many bands were busting their butts down South to get signed by a major label or win some awards at the 13th annual South by Southwest Music Conference.

Held in Austin, Texas, the conference boasts hundreds of bands trying to get into the large-label spotlight, but before the music began, an award ceremony was held.

Motley Crue won Best Road Show (it seems the ’80s will never die), Push Monkey was declared the Best Hard Rock Band, and David Garza was voted Musician of the Year.

Upcoming Releases

Luna will release its fifth album, “The Days of Our Nights,” on May 25, according to Rocktropolis. The record, produced by former Grant Lee Buffalo bassist Paul Kimble, will feature the legendary Guns ‘N’ Roses song “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

The cover originally began as a b-side that was finished in two hours, frontman Dean Wareham explained, but Luna changed it after the record company wanted to put it on the album. Don’t expect an Axl Rose wanna be performing the song.

“It really sounds like us,” Wareham said.

If you were “down with P” a couple of years ago, you may enjoy the upcoming Rentals album, “Seven More Minutes.” Maverick will release the sophomore album on April 13, and the first video, “Getting By,” will be out relatively soon (shooting began over break).
