Cyclones host first round
March 8, 1999
The ISU women’s basketball team got some good news on Sunday.
The team, which gathered in the team room in Hilton Coliseum, learned that they would play host to the first two games of the NCAA tournament.
The 4th-seeded Cyclones will open up against 13th-seeded Santa Clara on Friday at approximately 8:30 p.m. In the other game, the 5th-seeded Oregon Ducks will take on the 12th-seeded Cincinatti.
The Cyclones, who finished the regular season with a record of 22-7, feel they deserved the honor.
“We had a good record, we play in the second best conference in the nation, our RPI is high, I really think we deserved this,” coach Bill Fennelly said.
The Cyclones will face a Santa Clara team which finished 22-6 overall, including a mark of 12-4 in West Coast Conference play.
Tickets will go on sale to the public at 8 a.m. today. There have already been 4,000 tickets sold to season ticket holders and Cyclone Club members.
This combined with the required allotment to the other three teams means the lower level is sold out.
However, a representative from the ticket office said there will be a limited amount of seats that will be reserved for students behind each basket.
The record crowd for a game at Hilton Coliseum is 9,705 for a woman’s game, which was set when ISU battled Rutgers for a berth in the Sweet Sixteen last year.
The regular season record for attendance, currently at 8,520, was broken on four separate occasions this year, and ticket office employees say a sellout would not be a surprise.
