Ashamed in Ames
March 29, 1999
I was absolutely ashamed to be an Iowa State student this morning as I walked through campus. I could not (and still cannot) believe that my fellow students could rip down stops signs and parking lot signs, throw concrete trash barrels in the stream and even worse, start fires.
First of all, how the heck is destroying university property going to help the cause any? Do you think Jischke is going to let people drink at Veishea after what happened?
The small chance there was that we would have a non-dry Veishea just got demolished.
Thousands of dollars will probably have to be spent to replace and repair all of the damaged property. Where do you think this money will come from? I guess we can forget about getting the two-ply toilet paper.
As if vandalism is not irrational enough, the second reason that these riots were uncalled for is that probably 90 percent of those who were rioting were under 21. These people do not get to drink anyway, not just by university law, but by state law. They have no right to complain.
Let’s have some maturity. If you absolutely can’t handle not drinking for a week, then leave town and enjoy the alcohol poisoning.
