Conservation through not killing

Benjamin W. Bauer

This is in response to Schuster’s letter that stated that anyone opposed to dove hunting is wrong.ÿ

How is killing animals a great benefit to society?

It seems kind of elementary, but if we didn’t kill the fishes or the pheasants we wouldn’t have to spend state money on stocking and conserving them.

There are many ways to preserve wildlife by not killing animals.ÿ

I, for one, like to trout fish. Like you, I too did river bank tree planting.ÿ

I practice catch and release and try not to injure the fish by using barbless hooks on my flies.

Instead of using a rifle, one could use a camera.ÿ

Not expensive enough? Buy a more expensive one.

If this is not your thing then recycle, take an environmental/ ecology class or even take a bike ride/walk on one of many bike trails in Iowa.

It is unfortunate that our society needs hunters to control certain animal populations due to the lack of natural predators.ÿ

Doves are not an overpopulated species that requires hunting.ÿ

Mr. Schuster, just because you spent all of that money on licenses doesn’t give you the right to demand certain hunting privileges and condemn the opinions of non-hunters.ÿÿ

Our opinions are justified and contribute to wildlife.ÿ
