Instructors take class to the gym

The co-instructors of Exercise Sport 259 are giving their students the chance to learn about class objectives through hands-on activity.

The students will traveling to the Ames Racquet & Fitness Center, 320 S. 17th St., to attend a workshop in high/low step aerobics.

The workshop will be held on March 9 and 10, during the normally scheduled class time.

Instructors Deb Power and Deb Atkinson said the field trip is designed to have the students watch and learn from the instructors at the fitness center.

Power, adjunct instructor of health and human performance, said the workshop will be an educational experience for the students.

“This workshop allows our students to watch [the fitness center’s] instructors and expose them to different types of group exercise classes that they might eventually be teaching,” she said.

Atkinson, temporary instructor of health and human performance, agreed that the trip will give the students a good lesson.

“It’s very beneficial that we get the students into the heart of group aerobics,” she said. “We need the students to get acquainted with the new modes out there.”

Atkinson said many of the students currently are not comfortable in leading an aerobic dance workout. The field trip will allow them to see other instructors at work and to see the different ways to teach exercises, she said.

“After each student goes through the session, they will work on teaching a 45-minute class to their peers,” Atkinson said.

The field trip will also allow the students to work with advanced exercise equipment, Power said.

“We don’t have access to some equipment like cycles, and the fitness club helps us out in our instruction,” she said.

Power said Exercise Sport 259 is divided into three parts: personal training, aerobic exercise and water exercise.

The students currently are studying aerobic exercise, with an emphasis in group exercise.
