Ankeny High School won the regional Science Bowl Jan. 30, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory and Iowa State.

The students fielded questions on topics ranging from mathematics to sciences.

Ankeny’s team won the championship match 84-30.

Pleasant Valley High School finished second, and Valley High School in Des Moines, the winners of the 1998 National Science Bowl, placed third.

ISU President Martin Jischke served as moderator for the Science Bowl, which was held at the Memorial Union.

The majority of the 40 schools entered in the event had four or five team members participating, but Ankeny had only three members participating in the contest: Doug Fuller, Jared Feuerhelm and Josh Sayre.

Ankeny will now advance with 52 other regional winners in the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, which is scheduled from April 30 to May 3 in Chevy Chase, Md.

The winner of that event will advance to the 30th International Science School for high school students July 5-16 at the University of Sydney in Australia.
