Sweet and Fancy rock
February 11, 1999
Sweet Fancy Moses’ name has nothing to do with the Bible character.
The Washington-based group (who got its name from a “Seinfeld” episode) has a unique sound, and an undeniable charisma that has made the band one of the Northwest’s best kept secrets.
The group’s style can be best described as a combination of folk and rock. Though lead vocalist/bass guitarist Mark Kelley’s vocals and the band’s rich sound are captivating, the most appealing thing about the group is its homegrown sense.
Sweet Fancy Moses started off as an indie band that specialized in the live scene. As the group’s fanbase picked up, it caught the attention of Pyxis Records, who released the group’s debut.
During its concerts, the band likes to play a mixture of different acoustic songs. This often means the band will play normal tracks as well as “some of their favorite songs from when they were growing up,” Kelley said.
Sweet Fancy Moses is currently nearing the end of the Midwest portion of its Midwest/Eastcoast tour. Most of the Midwest part of the tour has been acoustic, however, Kelley said the Eastcoast part of the tour will be all jazzed out — which is what the band specializes in.
Sweet Fancy Moses will play a live show at Julio’s in Des Moines Saturday night.
