Groups solicit GSB for special funding

The Government of the Student Body had a unusually docile meeting Wednesday night, dealing mostly with simple funding bills.
Several student groups went before GSB seeking funding for various purposes, such as conferences and equipment.
The National Society of Black Engineers, Freshman Council and Panhellenic Council sought money for conferences. The Scuba Club wanted money for general funding, and the Gaffer’s Guild wanted help preserving the guild and buying a new lab.
GSB President Bryan Burkhardt said the funding process has seen no significant changes in recent years.
“Things are going pretty much the same,” he said. “We have been making sure that the money is being spent in the best possible way and most wisely by student groups.”
When groups ask GSB for funding, Burkhardt said they should be prepared to be denied some of their requests.
“Each of the groups that comes through for hearings has to understand that they may not get their full request,” he said. “Being over budget is not something new — it’s something that has happened before.”
Burkhardt also said nothing external, such as the upcoming elections, has gotten in the way of GSB business.
“Some people in GSB have indicated that they would like to be considered for election or re-election. I certainly hope they can vote in the best interest of the students and not be influenced by the election process,” he said.
Jay McLaren, off campus, said GSB is doing its best to serve students and student groups while still keeping in accordance with the bylaws.
“The way we sort of approach every group that comes before GSB is different,” he said. “It depends on how they abide by the rules in the bylaws.”
McLaren said it is important for GSB and student groups to understand the importance of following the bylaws.
“If we get into a habit of not abiding by the funding criteria in the bylaws, then it will be open season for GSB funding,” he said.
